Imagination Library

Children living in Siouxland are eligible to receive free age-appropriate books through Imagination Library, a literacy initiative developed for preschoolers from birth to age five.

Educators have identified preschool reading and parent involvement as among the most important steps toward a child's success in school. The Imagination Library is a proactive approach to help children achieve success in education and in life while encouraging family participation and promoting healthy lifelong reading habits.

According to the American Library Association, in order for children to be ready for school, they need to be read to (in addition to their favorites) at least 125 new or different books per year between the ages of 3 to 5.

Who is eligible?

Any child from birth until their 5th birthday who resides in Siouxland.  Currently, one child per family can receive free books.  Books for additional children are available for $28.25 per year.

Call United Way of Siouxland at 712-255-3551 to enroll.  It generally takes from 6-8 weeks from the date of enrollment to receive the first book.

This literacy initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Crittenton Center, Lutheran Services of Iowa, the Dollywood Foundation, WIC, Siouxland District Health, Mercy Medical Center, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Western Hills AEA, Even Start Family Literacy, Sioux City Community Schools, Woodbury County School Districts, South Sioux City School District and Dakota Valley School District.
